Introduction

jack You may remember that the 'Eye on' section of Global Eye Primary, Spring 2001 looked at life in The Gambia, a small country in West Africa. You can go back to these pages by clicking here.
In April 2001, Year 6 pupils of Hangleton Junior School, Sussex were lucky enough to have a visitor from The Gambia called Edward Kamara. Edward is a teacher in The Gambia, and the pupils found out lots of interesting things about his home country. Let's hear what they had to say about Edward's visit. harry

Lyndsey said

"Edward told us lots of useful things about The Gambia. You might think that The Gambia has nothing in common with the UK. But The Gambia has music and nightclubs. Most of the music is rap. They enjoy it a lot. Edward likes it too."

Edward brought us some groundnut seeds. Since then, we have been growing groundnuts in our classroom!

Elizabeth and Claire said,

"In The Gambia, they don't eat as much food as we do. The main food they eat is rice and groundnuts".

Ryan and Joe said,

"In schools in The Gambia there are an amazing amount of children in classrooms, about 76 per class. In England we only have about 30 children in each class and one teacher. In Gambian schools, they have musical productions like our school".

Savina and Hannah said,

"When Edward came to visit us he answered a lot of our questions. The picture above on the right hand side shows Edward telling us how they use a teapot in The Gambia. On the left hand side you can see a picture of Edward in the computer suite. We were showing him some of the work we have been doing this term".

Lyndsey said,

"The Gambia is a very hot country. During July and September it is the rainy season. So it is very weird for Edward to come over and see rain in England. The last rain he saw was around September 2000".

Elizabeth and Clare said,

"At the end of the day, we were very glad that we had a chance to speak to Edward and we hope he enjoyed his stay in England".
