Ancestors
Family members who died a long time ago

Asylum Seekers
People who leave their countries because of persecution and look for safety elsewhere.

Colony
A territory or country that is controlled by another country.

Densely populated
A place that has a lot of people living on a small amount of land.

GNP
This stands for 'Gross National Product', which means the amount of money that a country makes in a year. It is usually divided between the number of people in the country to make an average wealth per person.

Heavy industry
Industries that use heavy equipment to make cars, ships, iron and steel.

High technology
Industries that use the most up-to-date equipment to produce high tech goods or services, like making computers.

Independent
When a colony wins the right to control its own affairs.

Infant Mortality
The number of babies out of every thousand born that die before the age of one.

Life Expectancy
How long people are expected to live. This is measured in years.

Nomadic
People who move from place to place to find work, food, or water and fresh grass for their animals.

Rice paddies
Fields planted with rice.

Refugee
A person who has to move away from their own country against their will.

Telecommunications
Sending and receiving information over long distances using electrical equipment.
