The Gambia was used as a source of slaves for both British and Portuguese traders. Gambians were sold as slaves in exchange for clothes, alcohol and jewellery. Using the trade winds to guide the ships across the Atlantic Ocean, slaves were shipped over to the Americas. Many died on the journey.
