Introduction

Rwanda
In 1994, fighting broke out between Rwanda's two cultural groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis. This civil war was especially vicious. In a hundred days, nearly a million people died. Many innocent people were killed just for being a Hutu or a Tutsi. A massive wave of Hutu people were forced to leave their country, many of them by foot. In total, two million Rwandans became refugees in neighbouring countries. In 1996, more than half of these refugees who were living in camps in Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of Congo) were caught up in another civil war. Many decided that it was safer to return home.
