Coca and rural development - Talkboard
'Eye on...' looks at Peru. The issue of coca cultivation in Andean countries is covered in a case study which raises important points about the rural economy and globalisation.
There are several areas you might want to find out more about:
The quality of life for people in the Andean region.
International policies on drug production.
There are other countries which cultivate crops used to make illegal drugs.
Joep Oomen, who runs the European NGO Council on Drugs and Development, has written extensively about these issues and will help to answer your questions.
Alternatively you might like to respond to the questions and answers other people have sent by giving your ideas or opinions.
Q: Is there Cocaine in Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola?
Joep Oomen: No, not cocaine, but the coca plant is used. Stepan, an American country, legally buys 175,000 kilos of coca from Chapare each year to manufacture, among other things, a flavouring for Coca-Cola. It does not contain cocaine.
