Altitude
The height of the land above sea-level, sometimes known as elevation.

Calories
These measure the energy we get from different foods. We need different amounts of calories depending upon our age, lifestyle, and level of activity.


Carbohydrates
Food substances that provide energy for muscles.


Continent
Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America are the world's seven continents. They are land masses that contain groups of countries.

Dialect
A variation on a language spoken by a particular group.

Drought
A long time with little or no rainfall. This often leads to a water shortage.

Fats
Food substances that provide energy, and help with the growth and repair of our bodies.

Fibre
Food substances that reduce the risk of disease, sometimes known as 'roughage'.

Food miles
The distance travelled by our food from where it is grown to our local shop or supermarket. It includes the cost of fuels used, environmental pollution caused, and energy used up.

GNP
This stands for Gross National Product, which means the amount of money that a country makes in a year. It is usually divided between the number of people in the country to make an average wealth per person.

Infant Mortality
The number of babies out of every thousand born that die before the age of one.

Life Expectancy
How long people are expected to live. This is measured in years.

Malnourished
A malnourished person is not getting enough of all the different kinds of foods we need for a balanced diet. Malnourished people can become ill and may catch serious diseases.

Minerals
Substances that help our bodies to grow. We need: iron - to help blood carry oxygen; calcium - for teeth & bones; & sodium - to help nerves carry messages around the body.

Monsoon
These are winds that blow across south Asia from the south-west in the summer and from the north-east in the winter, bringing lots of rain with them.

Plantation
A type of farm found in tropical areas. A plantation usually covers a large area and grows one or two types of crop.

Protein
Food substances that help our bodies to grow.

Pulses
Small peas and beans like lentils.

Sustainable
Sustainable Development is ways to improve the quality of life for people by using resources carefully. This way, the natural environment and culture of a place can last for generations.

Vitamins
Chemicals that we need to help the growth and repair of our bodies. Some important ones are: Vitamin A - for sight, teeth & bones; B - for brain & nervous system; C - to help fight disease & heal cuts; D - for strong bones; & E - to heal burns.
