Today we may be producing more things, but we are making more waste too. In the UK we fill so many bins, that if they were lined up they would stretch all the way to the moon and back!

The waste produced in Britain over last Christmas alone was the equivalent of 400,000 double-decker buses stretching all the way from London to New York City!

Every fortnight in the UK each person on average throws away:

Can you work out how much of these things we throw away every month? And what about every year? Click here to see if you are right.

And that's just one person! Imagine how much waste would be produced just by your class, or by your school! Now try to imagine what it must be for our entire population of more than 60 million people. Help! Our island is drowning in waste!

For lots of useful facts and games about our waste, go to the Recycle Zone.

Waste comes in different forms - solid, liquid or gas. Drag these kinds of waste into the correct column on the table.

But we don't all throw away the same amount. On the map find out how much waste an average person throws away every year in different countries.

Richer countries seem to be the biggest wasters - why do you think this is?

Where does the waste go?

Poorer countries produce less waste to start with. But without a system of rubbish collection, much of it is dumped in streets or on open tips. On the edge of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, 10,000 families live on or near a giant rubbish tip known as Smoky Mountain.

Many of things we throw away could be used again. Just take the plastic carrier bag, for instance. Go to the next page to find out more.
