Harry Some people believe that our weather is changing- with bigger floods, hotter temperatures and stronger winds. Click on the points on the map to find out about some of the extreme weather in 2001. They could be warning signs that our climate is changing.

What's the difference between weather and climate?

to find out.
Ceclile No matter where you live, the climate is always changing to some degree. The big question is whether climate change today is part of a bigger change that will affect future life on the planet.
Many scientists are worried that the actions of people are adding to the natural changes in the world's climate, making it change more rapidly. Gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxide enter the atmosphere naturally, creating a blanket of gases in the atmosphere. These gases stop too much heat from getting in and too much heat from escaping, rather like a greenhouse. But people are releasing more of these 'greenhouse' gases. Harry
Cecile Have a look at these pictures. Three of them show something that people do that adds to the 'greenhouse' gases to the atmosphere, one doesn't. Can you work out which one is the odd one out? Rollover each picture if you need some help.

With a thicker blanket of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the warmer we get on the earth's surface. This is called 'global warming'. Jack

Jack Global warming is more than just warmer temperatures. It can set off other changes in the climate, like more storms and floods. Go to the next page to find out why people that live on some of the South Pacific islands are especially worried.
