Sadly, the issue of HIV and AIDS is hitting the headlines again as the number of newly infected people rises in different parts of the world. Recently, there has been a major battle going on in the South African courts over whether any company should be allowed to produce the drugs that can control the effects of HIV at a cheap price so that everyone can afford them, or whether the large pharmaceutical companies have ownership rights over these drugs.

If you have your own views or comments on these or any other issues concerning HIV/AIDS, why not write to Miranda Lewis, who works for VSO Campaigns, supporting projects like 'LoveLife' in South Africa that is tackling the infection rate amongst young people.

If you have any health questions about HIV or AIDS and would like to know more, you could also send in a question to our other expert in this edition, Ruth Hilton, who is a PSHE teacher adviser in Brighton, Hove and East Sussex.

Your views, comments and questions will be displayed on this web page, unless you tell us you would like yours kept confidential..

Type your name and question (or comment) in the boxes below, then click on 'post'. Messages entered here are sent to Global Eye for approval before they are sent on to one of our experts, so there will be a small delay before your message appears.

I am researching into the effects of AIDS around the world, and how different countries try to deal with this devastating disease.
I would be very grateful if you could send me some information about the different areas it can affect in a country, economically and socially in different area of the world.
I was particularly interested Nkosi Johnson's story, has it had an encouraging effect throughout South Africa? Are all the children with AIDS in South America in foster care or are there other organisations that look after these children?
I would be very grateful for any help that you can give,
thankyou,
Becky (17yrs)

'This aerial view of Kayelitsha township on the edge of Cape Town shows how during apartheid these housing areas were planned in a grid pattern to make it easier for the authorities to control.' - This is the write-up next to your picture on the website. Is it not just plain common sense to plan houses on the grid system, so that when a fire breaks out, it is easier to get fire engines close to the houses? Believe me that when a fire does break out in one of these houses, it spreads very quickly to the neighbouring houses, so fire-engines need to have access to them.

is it Africa's own fould that they are threatened by AIDS or couldn't they do anything about it?
greetins from Holland

Of course it isn't Africa's own fault. They are trying as hard as they can to stop AIDS. The problem is that they are in conditions that are more susceptible to the virus due to past history. They also have a lot of obstacles that, say Holland, doesn't really worry about, such as costs of medicines. South Africa was actually sued in 1998, and won thankfully, for changing their legislation to acquire cheaper drugs! With problems like these, along with all the other stuff they deal with (like extreme poverty), they are more vulnerable. And by the way, everyone is threatened, conditions make others more vulnerable.

South Africa should stop blaming AIDS on the past, that had nothing to do with AIDS but with racial problems!!! So instead of looking for someone to blame they should spend their time on trying to fix the problem!!!!!
