You might want to ask a question about Brazil. If you do, visit the Talkboard page and you can ask questions to Jose, who lives in Manaus on the banks of the river Amazon.

'Where did Brazil get its name from?'to find out.

Yes, Brazil is famous for some things, but there is a lot more to the country than rainforest and football. After all, Brazil is HUGE! It covers half the continent of South America, and it's the world's fifth largest country. To give you an idea of how big it is, click on the map and you can see how Brazil compares to the UK.

How many countries the size of the UK could fit into Brazil?
for the answer.

Brazil is so big that you can travel thousands of kilometres to go from one city to another. Click on the icon to look at a table that shows you the driving distances in km between different cities in Brazil.

Using the table, have a go at these questions:

1. How far is it from Rio to Manaus?
for the answer.
2. Which city is furthest from Rio Sao Paolo, Cuiaba or Belem?
for the answer.
3. If you were going from Rio to Salvador and then on to Recife, how many kilometres would you travel?
for the answer.
4. Out of all these cities, which is the longest journey that you would make to drive from one city to another?
for the answer.
5. Looking at the distances, which city seems to be furthest away from the others by road? Can you explain why this is so? Go to the Land and Climate page if you need a clue.
for the answer.
