jack The Amazon drainage basin is huge, and it catches water from an enormous area. You will know from your Science and Maths, that a shallow, wide container has a greater surface area than that of a narrow, deep one. So it is with the Amazon drainage basin. Its area is about 7 million square km.
The Amazon is so big; there are still areas we know little about. And it has large numbers of animals, birds, insects, plants and fungi living along its banks. Some haven't even been discovered yet! cecile
harry Because of the way in which we are destroying parts of the land in the Amazon region, some species of plant and animal will die out before they have even been named.
The river and its drainage basin are under threat from many of the activities that are going on today. Join us as we journey along the Amazon and discover what life is like for some of its inhabitants. cecile
