Some sports and pastimes have been around for hundreds of years, but technology has changed the way we spend a lot of our leisure time. Can you think of any popular pastimes today that rely on technology? Look at the picture from Taiwan for a clue! |

Watching television is one of them. In the UK, we watch an average of 1,500 hours a year, compared to the 900 hours a year we spend at school! |
 | Look at the table. It shows the average amount of time children watch TV in different countries. See if you can answer Jack's questions! |

- Sort the countries into these continents: North & South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia. In which continents do children seem to watch the most TV, and the least TV?
- Which of the populated continents is not included in the table? Can you think of some possible reasons why not?
- Do you watch more or less TV than the average for the UK? Set your stopwatch and find out!

Some places have no electricity, which means no TV. Imagine you live in one of these places - write down a list of things that you might do with your leisure time instead of watching the telly. |

Many children don't have leisure time anyway - they have jobs to do! When they come back from school, they might help out the family by earning money. Other children have to look after their younger brothers and sisters, or even the family cow, like this boy in China! |

 | Of course, some people say that simply watching TV is not a real leisure activity - after all, you're not actually doing anything active! What do you think? |
A lot of people are worried by how little activity many young people are doing these days. Fewer are getting the recommended two hours of physical activity a week in school and eating more of the wrong kinds of food. As more children turn into couch potatoes, the number of overweight, unhealthy young people is rising fast. |
In our Spring 2002 edition of Global Eye, we looked at the effect of eating the right kinds of food. When you link a good, balanced diet with exercise it can make a big difference. The British Heart Foundation says that just one hour of exercise a day helps to keep you healthy. It can make you feel happier too! |
