Harry

I don't get it - the Ancient Egyptians loved this flood, but whenever I read a news story on a flood it's always a disaster!

Read carefully what the farmer says, Harry. Every year the flood spread silt and mud across the surrounding land. When the floodwaters disappeared the silt helped to make a rich soil so they could grow crops for food. It's still the same today – look at this NASA picture of Egypt from space – can you spot the farmland on either side of the river?

Cecille Look what I've found - a graph that shows how much the Nile rises and falls during the year.

Cecille Nile in numbersHave a go at the quiz to see how well you understand the graph! Download and print the graph so you have a copy in front of you. Then, have a go at the 'Nile in numbers' quiz...

Jack Download and print your own copy of the graph, and some comments from people talking about changes in the river. From the graph can you work out what time of year they are talking about?

Great finds

To control the big flood the Egyptians built a massive dam at Aswan in the south of the country. Here is a NASA picture of it from space. It took ten years to build!

When it was finally finished in 1971, the Aswan High Dam was a record-breaker. With much of the Nile's water trapped behind it, the dam created the world's biggest reservoir called Lake Nasser. The reservoir is now 550 kilometres long – about the same as travelling from London to Edinburgh! Click on the picture for more record-breaking facts about the Aswan High Dam!

Harry The Egyptians must be pleased that they no longer have to worry about being washed away by the big flood ...

Cecille The dam wasn't all good news, Harry. It also created new problems. Can you sort these changes made by the dam by dragging them into the right column in the table?

Jack Visit On Camera to learn about the adventures of my friend, Dave. He managed to make it all the way down the Nile from its source in Ethiopia to the Mediterranean Sea! Then again, Dave is a water droplet! Or go to the next page to find out about some of my other friends that live along the Nile all the time.
