Ethiopia
has one of the oldest civilisations in the
world. In the picture, you can see the church
of Abba Libanos that was carved out of a rock
face 800 years ago.

What
about the different people of Ethiopia?
Where do they come from?
|
The
people of Ethiopia come from many different
cultural backgrounds. The main groups
are the Oromo, Amhara, Tigre and Soma.
But there are many other small ethnic
groups as well as many refugees from
other countries. The official language
is Amharic, but other languages are
also spoken. In secondary schools, the
children have to learn English as well.

Each
group of people in Ethiopia have developed
their own cultures and traditions. Here,
Tigre women are weaving baskets. Their
children try to lend a helping hand
too! |

Ethiopian
people grow a number of grains to eat, including
wheat, barley and
a local grain called teff. Below two people
are winnowing the teff, to sieve away the
bits of the plant that you can't eat. An important
part of the Ethiopian diet is a big, spongy
pancake called injera, which is made from
teff. |
