Co-operative An enterprise or organization that is jointly owned and run by the people that work there.
 
Drainage Basin The area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.
 
Ecosystem A community of organisms and their non-living environment.
 
Epiphyte Sometimes called an 'air plant', these plants live on another plant or tree but get their food from the air or from rainwater.
 
Externality The indirect effect of an activity, such as pollution.
 
Futures market A market where commodities like coffee, sugar, cocoa, copper and gold are bought and sold. The amount of buying and selling influences the price of the commodity on the world market.
 
GNP Gross National Product, the total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a year. It is often measured 'per capita' or per person, to make an average.
 
Infant mortality The number of babies out of every thousand born that die before the age of one.
 
Migration The movement of people to live in different place.
 
Population density The number of people per square kilometre.
 
Quota A restriction in the quantity of a particular good or service that a country is allowed to sell/trade.
 
Referendum When people can vote to support or reject a new law.
 
Subsidy Money provided by the government to keep the price of a good or service low.
 
Transnational company TNC for short and also known as a 'multinational corporation', this is a company that owns and operates manufacturing or service businesses in more than one country.
