The UN Convention
on the Rights of the Child states that everybody has the
right to free primary education. Today aid is helping
more children go to school in Tanzania, one of the world's
poorest countries. To find out more about the UN Convention

to compare education in Tanzania with the UK
For many Tanzanians,
learning to read and write is a passport out of poverty. Over
a third of Tanzania's children have never been to school.
But the government has recently announced that more money
should be spent on schools, and all fees for primary schools
should be abolished. Click on the icons to find out how and
why the situation is changing.

Here at Mlalo primary
school children are looking after the plant nursery that
grows food for school lunch. Through 'self-reliance projects'
and citizenship lessons, young people play a part in supporting
and developing the school. |
So far the spotlight
on education has succeeded in getting an extra million Tanzanian
children into school. With better education, children acquire
the skills to continue learning throughout their lives. This
way, improved education is another important way of developing
sustainably.
