Favelas A word used in Brazil to describe poor urban neighbourhoods or shanty towns.
 
GDP per capita Gross Domestic Product, the total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a year. It is often measured 'per capita' or per person, to make an average.
 
Infant Mortality The number of babies born out of every thousand that die before the age of one.
 
Multiplier Effect The idea that once one successful business grows in an area, other businesses will benefit and expand as well.
 
Population Density The number of people per square kilometre.
 
Quota A restriction in the quantity of a particular good or service that a country is allowed to sell/trade.
 
Ratified To make something part of a country's law.
 
Tariff A duty (tax) on goods imported into a country.
 
Transnational Company TNC for short and also known as a 'multinational corporation', this is a company that owns and operates manufacturing or service businesses in more than one country.
 
World Trade Organisation (WTO) An organisation set up in 1995 designed to open up and ensure fair play in international trade. The WTO can impose penalties on countries that break the rules.
