Creating a 'Code of Conduct' To avoid sweatshop conditions in the factories where The Gap products are manufactured, the company has compiled its own set of rules called the 'Code of Vendor Conduct'.

Imagine you are in charge of the department responsible for protecting the rights of workers in all factories making The Gap clothes. Design your own 'Code of Vendor Conduct' for display on the wall of every factory so that consumers of your products can be assured that the clothes that they buy are not made in a 'sweatshop'. Also, think about how you could enforce your set of rules.

Some things to consider:

  • How to ensure a safe and healthy working environment
  • How to ensure that workers are not victims of harassment by their supervisors
  • How to ensure quality control of products
  • Hours/days of work and overtime conditions
  • Breaks during the day for workers
  • Upper and lower age limits of the workforce
  • Wage rates in proportion to the cost of the final products
  • Conditions of Dismissal

You could produce this by hand or use a desktop publishing program.
Include your name(s), year group, teacher's name, and the name and address of your school and then send your entry by post or e mail it as a html attachment to:
