Ecosystem
A community of organisms and their non-living environment.
Favela
A word used in Brazil to describe poor urban neighbourhoods or shanty towns.
Fertility rate
The average number of children a woman would have.
GNP per capita
Gross National Product, the total value of all the goods and services produced by a country in a year. It is often measured 'per capita' or per person, to make an average.
Infant Mortality
The number of babies born out of every thousand that die before the age of one.
Informal sector
Types of jobs that often have irregular working hours, use local materials, and operate on the street rather than in an office or factory.
LEDC
Stands for Less Economically Developed Country.
MEDC
Stands for More Economically Developed Country.
Plantation
A commercial type of farm found in tropical areas. A plantation usually covers a large area and grows one or two types of crop.
Plateau
A flat area of land on raised ground.
Savanna
An ecosystem found in the sub-tropics. Characterised by grassland, scattered drought-resistant trees and a well-defined wet season.
STI
Stands for sexually transmitted infection.
Subsidised
A good or service for which money provided by the government keeps the price low.
Weathered
Rock that has been broken down by processes like changes in temperature, burrowing plant roots, or a chemical change in the rock.
