Visit the teachers' notes for descriptions of the images.
Go to Eye on Brazil to find out about the lives of street children in Rio de Janeiro and projects that are trying to improve their quality of life.

How do you think they are feeling to be out on the streets?
What are they doing in order to survive?
Who would they turn to for help?
In your view, which photograph is the odd one out?

Visit http://www.unicef.org/crc/crc.htm or
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library/documents-w9/rotc-01.htm for the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Which of these basic rights are denied to homeless young people?

In groups of three, imagine you represent the following people:

a) A manager of a local business
b) A tourist
c) A volunteer for a charity helping the homeless

Individually, write captions for each of the photographs. Afterwards, compare your captions with the others in your group:

  • How are they different?
  • Why might they have different views about homeless young people?
  • Of all the sets of captions, which are closest to your own views?
