How PC is your computer? CAFOD have developed a number of resources around the theme of working conditions of those that make computers and associated issues:

  1. The computer game is a simulation that explores the conditions endured by electronics workers in Mexico as uncovered by CAFOD's Clean up your computer campaign. Participants encounter injustice in a recruitment agency, a computer factory and a shop, and are encouraged to reflect on their experiences. Playing time: 2 x 60 minutes for 9-10 players. Age 11+. Free from CAFOD. Email: [email protected] or phone 020 7326 5571.

  2. Visit www.cafod.org.uk/resources/schoolsteachers/resource_packs/ for web pages on CAFODs clean up your computer campaign.

  3. You can use CAFODs clean up your computer campaign for a drama-based assembly. Visit www.cafod.org.uk/resources/schoolsteachers/school_assemblies/ for more details.

Eye on Kenya

Shootback (Booth Clibborn Editions 2000) is highly recommended. Photographer Lana Wong first visited Mathare, Nairobi's largest slum, in January 1995. Two years later she launched Shootback, a project that put basic point-and-shoot cameras in the hands of 32 teenage boys and girls from slum families. The book, a collage of pictures and words, takes the reader into the slum without the mediation of the foreign photographer's eye. The photographs speak eloquently of friends, family, football fever and the harsh realities of everyday life in the slums. Like the Shootback project itself, the book is backed by the Ford Foundation, Netherlands Development Assistance (NEDA) and the Stromme Memorial Foundation (Norway). Read a BBC review of the book.
Purchase the book from: www.amazon.co.uk/, from £18.99.
