Climate
Eye On Sri Lanka Sun, sand and palm trees along Sri Lanka's south west coast, a popular tourist destination
Sri Lanka generally has a hot, humid, tropical climate. The island's location just 6 degrees north of the equator means that temperature and humidity are consistently high all year. The only variations are caused by altitude, with the mountains and hills of the central southern area having cooler, less humid conditions.

Rainfall distribution and amounts are much more varied. Trade winds bring two monsoon seasons and the heaviest rainfall. In the north east, annual rainfall is just over 1000 mms, most falling during the October-January 'Maha' monsoon season. The south west is much wetter; totals reach above 2000 mms, the majority falling during the 'Yala' monsoon season from May to August.
