South Pacific islanders earn a living from
mining or farming, like this sugar cane farmer

Fishing is
another very important industry. Half the world's
fish are found in South Pacific waters.
One fish
is especially important. Each year, we buy more
and more of it, either in tins, as fresh steaks,
or in Japanese food like sushi. Can you work out
the name of the fish from the anagram? Move your
cursor over the word if you need some help.
But our growing
appetite for this fish is putting it in danger. to
read a newspaper article to find out more.
Now have a
go at our fishy worksheet! to
print it out. (You can type your answers in and
then print or print then write your answers in.) You

There are
other types of fish that are in trouble as fishermen
catch too many. See if you can unscramble the anagrams
of three more fish that are in danger from over-fishing.
These three are found in the Atlantic Ocean, nearer
to the UK. Roll your cursor over the pictures to
find out the answers.
Should we
stop eating fish then? That would be great because
I don't like fish anyway!
No, but we
should be careful about what fish we buy. Have a
look in your fishmongers or supermarket to see if
any of these over-fished fish are on sale. And look
out for tins of tuna that have a 'dolphin friendly'
label. This tuna was caught in nets that did not
trap and kill dolphins.
