Introduction

cecile Thousands of people from Kenya, Sudan and Somalia are refugees in Ethiopia. Although some people have been able to return home, for others it is still too dangerous. These refugees live in camps in different parts of the country.

The map shows where there are refugee camps in Ethiopia. Click on the arrows to find out the number of people who have moved to and from these camps in 2000 and the number of refugees that are still living there. Why do you think the camps for Somali refugees are in the east of Ethiopia, and the camps for Sudanese refugees are in the west? harry

Living in a refugee camp is neither easy nor fun. Some refugees may have to live there for years because it is too dangerous to go home. jack

What do people need the most when they first arrive in a refugee camp? Look at the different icons of things that people may need when they first arrive. Choose the four that you think people couldn't live without, and drag your cursor over them to see if you have chosen the four most essential needs.

It is difficult for refugee families to support themselves because many do not have jobs or land to grow food. Instead, they have to depend on the food given to them. Sometimes this isn't enough. cecile

This is particularly true for the Somalian refugee camps like this one in eastern Ethiopia. Here, the environment is very dry and harsh.

harry In many camps, the people have built special shelters so that the children can go to school.

As well as the usual subjects, refugee children learn about the dangers of landmines, which they may find in the ground when they return to their home country.
