Is
there an organisation that looks after refugees?
|
 |
There
are lots of organisations that work with refugees.
Some are very small community groups and others
are large national organisations.
The
most well known organisation that supports
refugees is the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees - UNHCR -
for short. In 1951, there were still
1.2 million European refugees left homeless
because of World War II. The UNHCR began
its work in that year to help these
refugees. |

The
UNHCR has been around for a long time.

in existence. |
|
Over
the years, the UNHCR's work has grown and
grown. In 2000, the UNHCR cared for 22.3 million
people. That means one in every 269 people
have been forced to leave their homes.
|
|
 |
What
does the UNHCR actually do then? |
The
UNHCR tries to help and protect refugees.
In most countries, this means that UNHCR workers
make sure that refugees have food, water and
shelter, and can receive medical help if they
need it. These are human rights that everybody
deserves. If it is possible, the UNHCR helps
refugee families to return home when the danger
has passed. |

How
does the UNHCR help those refugees who can't
go home? |

|
|
|
|
To
help them look after themselves, the
UNHCR have built wells, pipes and taps,
and provided seeds. This way, refugee
communities can reach water and grow
food for their daily needs. |

The
UNHCR has a huge job to help the refugees
who have to live in refugee camps, sometimes
for years. Nevertheless,
these refugees have to get on with their lives.
If you want to find out more about how people
live in refugee camps, choose 'Life in a Refugee
Camp' from the menu at the top of the page.

Are
there many children who are refugees?
Too
many! Women and children make up 80%
of all refugees in the world. |
 |
|
 |
The
UNHCR pays special attention to the needs
of refugee children, and makes sure that girls
are given the same rights as boys. Children
who have been separated from their families
or who no longer have a family need a lot
of extra care.

Whenever
possible, the UNHCR works to reunite
children with their families, or to
find a safe home for orphaned children. |

Where
is the UNHCR?

that is in? Click for the answer.

But
most of its 5,203 staff work in the countries
where refugees need help. Only 850 stay in
Geneva. Can you work out how many UNHCR staff
actually work in other countries?

Here
is a more difficult question for you. You
will need to use a calculator. What percentage

 |
How
can we help the UNHCR with their work?
|
In
1996, a charity called RefAid was set up in
the UK by UNHCR to support its work overseas.
Part of its work is to raise money for emergencies
and also to help the refugee communities around
the world. RefAid produces posters, videos
and other information for schools as well,
and each year it runs the 'Refugee Week' with
the Refugee Council. You can find out more
about RefAid by visiting their website, www.refaid.org.uk.
