Although
they are not officially 'refugees', there
are other reasons why people may be forced
to leave their homes. More and more people
have moved because of changes in the environment.
Unless they move, people face starvation because
of a drought, a flood or an earthquake as
their crops and animals are destroyed. You
can find out more about why people have faced
food shortages in Ethiopia in the past, go
to the 'Eye on Ethiopia' section of the website

Imagine
that you have suddenly found out that you
must leave your home to avoid danger in the
next 15 minutes, and you have no idea when
you may return. Before you leave, you just
have time to pack a suitcase, but you only
have room for 10 things. What would you take
and what would you leave behind? Compare your
list with your friends do you all agree
on the same things?
In
real life, some people don't have time
to pack a suitcase and instead have
to run for their lives. Wars force people
to move to seek refuge.
Some have to move to different parts
of their country. Others flee from their
country altogether and become refugees.
